Nina Dobrev and Paul Wesley spent the early seasons of The Vampire Diaries playing one of the 2010s' great teen supercouples and, by their own account, not being able to stand each other off camera. Now they are getting back together on purpose. Deadline reported Thursday that the two are reuniting to star in You Deserve to Know, a drama in development at Hulu, and the roles are almost too on the nose: they play neighbors on opposite sides of a murder investigation.

The show

You Deserve to Know is based on Aggie Blum Thompson's 2025 novel of the same name. The setup, per the official description, is three suburban couples who are next-door neighbors and best friends. One of the husbands is murdered, a trail of secrets spills out, and the friendship "cracks wide open."

Dobrev plays Gwen. Wesley plays Scott. Deadline describes them as two neighbors on opposite sides of the investigation, "leading them on a collision course."

Brian Tanen, who developed Grand Hotel and ran Love, Victor, is writing the adaptation. The producing bench is deep: Tanen and Thompson executive produce alongside Alex Cooper's Unwell, Matt Kaplan, Mina Lefevre, and Kapital Entertainment's Aaron Kaplan, with Dobrev also attached as a producer per TVLine. Kapital and 20th Television are the studios. Deadline says the project landed at Hulu in a competitive situation, which is industry-speak for "other buyers wanted it too."

Yes, that Alex Cooper. The Call Her Daddy host's company has quietly become a real TV shop, with this marking another scripted swing for Unwell.

The part that makes the casting funny

Here is the history. Dobrev and Wesley were Stefan and Elena, aka "Stelena," the couple a generation of viewers shipped before Elena drifted off toward Stefan's brother Damon in one of YA TV's defining love triangles. The on-screen chemistry was real. The reason behind it was a little less romantic.

"Paul and I didn't get along at the beginning of the show," Dobrev said in comments reported by Entertainment Tonight. "I respected Paul Wesley, I didn't like Paul Wesley." She added that "there's a fine line between love and hate and we despised each other so much that it read as love."

Wesley has backed her up, telling ET the two "totally clashed [the] first couple years in terms of just getting on each other's nerves."

For the record, the two never dated. Dobrev was with Ian Somerhalder, who played Damon, from 2011 to 2013. She and Wesley eventually became close, and she has said she never expected him to end up one of her best friends. So casting them as neighbors at each other's throats over a dead body basically recreates how the partnership started, just with better lighting and a body count.

What they've been up to

Dobrev recently premiered the short film General Admission at Tribeca and has the action thriller The Get Out coming up with Russell Crowe, Aaron Paul and Theresa Palmer. Wesley just wrapped the fifth and final season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, where he plays James T. Kirk, plus a recurring role in season three of Apple's The Buccaneers.

You Deserve to Know is still in development, so there is no premiere date, episode count or additional casting yet. What there is: two actors who once said they despised each other, signing up to spend a whole season playing neighbors who do too.
