Victoria Beckham put a photo of estranged son Brooklyn in Harper's 15th birthday carousel

Four Beckhams posted tributes on Friday. The eldest posted food. And the family feud is now being conducted entirely through Instagram captions.

Harper Beckham turned 15 on Friday, and four of the five people in her immediate family marked it on Instagram. Victoria posted a carousel. David posted a carousel. Cruz posted one. Romeo used his Story. Brooklyn, the eldest, posted about food.

That is the whole story, and in this family that is a lot of story.

What actually got posted

Victoria's post was a run of previously unseen photos of Harper, including an old clip of a small Harper caught in her mother's makeup bag ("Someone has taken mummy's lipstick"). The caption did not hedge:

"I cannot even begin to express how much I love and adore you and how incredibly proud I am to be your mummy: it has been the greatest joy to see you blossom into a young lady. You are a kind, gentle, funny, and beautiful soul, inside and out! You are my best friend and you inspire me every day!!"

Harper replied in the comments: "I love you so much."

David went black-and-white baby photos. "My Pretty Lady is turning 15 today," he wrote. "You are the perfect daughter."

Here is the part the internet fixed on. According to the Daily Mail, cited by Reality Tea, one frame in Victoria's carousel is a photo of Harper with Brooklyn. The estranged son, in the birthday post, on the birthday of the sister he is reportedly no longer speaking to. Reality Tea's own headline calls it a risk of "reigniting" the feud, which tells you exactly how the picture is being read.

Brooklyn himself, per the same report, spent the day posting food to his Stories.

The June letter, and the statement that followed it

You cannot read Friday's silence without the last one.

On June 12, while the family was in Los Angeles for David's Hollywood Walk of Fame star, Harper was photographed arriving at Brooklyn and Nicola Peltz's Beverly Hills home. She left a letter. She was there about 30 seconds. Brooklyn and Nicola were in New York.

Three days later, a representative for the couple gave HELLO! a statement that did not read like a family trying to patch anything up:

"The fact that photographers were in place as the letter was hand-delivered says it all. This was choreographed for the cameras."

A source close to the Beckhams told outlets that was "another untrue and unfair accusation." So: an accusation of staging, and a denial of the accusation of staging, about a letter delivered by a 14-year-old. Nobody in this has produced a receipt either way, and BCN is not going to pretend to know who was calling the paparazzi.

What is on the record, from Brooklyn's own account: in January he posted a long Instagram statement to his 16 million followers saying he had no interest in reconciling with his parents. "I'm not being controlled," he wrote. "I'm standing up for myself for the first time in my life."

The tell is in the tagging

Everything in this feud now happens through captions. David's Walk of Fame speech thanked "my beautiful children," all four of them, with one of the four several thousand miles away and not in the audience. Victoria's Harper carousel includes a son who has said publicly he wants nothing to do with her. Reality Tea reports Brooklyn was already annoyed in June about being included in his parents' Father's Day post.

That is the loop the Beckhams are stuck in. The parents keep including him, and the inclusion itself has become the provocation. There is no version of the birthday post that would have gone unread: leave Brooklyn out and it is a public snub of your own son, put him in and his camp treats it as a press strategy.

Meanwhile it is a 15-year-old's birthday, and the actual content of the day (a family dinner, four posts, one absence) is being scanned like the Zapruder film. Including, to be fair, right here.

What we are not saying

Harper is a minor. The tabloid line this week is that she is "heartbroken," sourced to nobody with a name, and we are leaving it there rather than putting words in a teenager's mouth. What is verifiable: she got four Instagram tributes from her family, she answered her mother's, and her oldest brother did not post one.
