Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster comes to Switch 2 on July 23

Square Enix is putting Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster on Switch 2, and the digital version lands July 23. The company announced the port on June 9, right before Nintendo's summer Direct, and the timing is not an accident. Final Fantasy X first shipped in Japan on July 19, 2001, so the game turns 25 the same month this version arrives.

This is the same two-in-one collection that has followed players across nearly every platform since the PS3 days. You get Final Fantasy X and its sequel Final Fantasy X-2 in one package, which runs past 100 hours if you finish both.

What's actually in it

Square Enix is carrying over the same features the 2019 Switch release had rather than rebuilding anything. That means the remade HD character and background art, the re-recorded soundtrack, a high-speed toggle, and the option to turn off random encounters. The Switch 2 pitch is that it runs sharper on stronger hardware. If you played the Switch version, you already know the baseline. Nintendo Life scored that one 9/10 back in 2019 and called it a faithful way to hand both games to a new audience.

Buy the physical copy and you get a 25th anniversary sleeve case. Preorder through Square Enix's own store and it adds a digital wallpaper.

The price is the argument

Fifty dollars for a resolution bump on a remaster that already exists on Switch is a fair thing to question, and players started questioning it the minute preorders went live. This is not a remake. It is the existing HD Remaster tuned for newer hardware. Whether it is worth full price comes down to one thing: do you already own it somewhere?

If Final Fantasy X has never had a spot on your shelf, a clean version of two RPGs from the series' peak is an easy call. If you bought the Switch release in 2019, the case is thinner, and Square Enix has not pretended this is anything more than a port.

Either way, it gives people a reason to go back to Spira in the month the game turns 25. Tidus, Yuna, and that laughing scene return to Nintendo hardware on July 23.
