The Next James Bond Auditions Are Set for August, and Villeneuve Is Making the Calls Himself

No name yet, but the 007 search just moved from general meetings to screen tests.

Bond casting just took a real step toward an actual face. Sources told Deadline that director Denis Villeneuve and producers Amy Pascal and David Heyman have started calling the actors who made the next round of auditions for 007, and that round is set for August. Villeneuve has reportedly been making some of those calls himself.

That is the news. No name is attached, and Amazon MGM Studios, which now produces and distributes the franchise, declined to comment. But "picking the room for a screen test" is a different stage than "taking general meetings," which is roughly where this search has been parked for the better part of a year.

How many, and who

The reporting gets fuzzy on the size of the August group, which is normal this early. Deadline's sources could not agree: one put it at five to seven actors, others said the number runs into the teens. Either way the read is that producers want options in the room rather than a coronation.

As for who, Deadline named Harris Dickinson, Callum Turner, and Jacob Elordi as the type of actor the team is circling. Read that carefully, because the distinction tends to evaporate the second a name lands in a headline. The story says those three fit the prototype. It does not say any of them has been told to show up in August. Treat the trio as a description of the lane, not a shortlist.

It is worth saying what that lane looks like. All three are British or Australian, late twenties to mid-thirties, and have spent the last few years moving from prestige supporting work into leading-man slots. That is a sensible profile for a studio that needs an actor it can lock into a multi-film commitment and age into the role across a decade. It is also, notably, not a marquee movie star, which fits how Bond has usually been cast. Connery, Craig, and most of the men in between were closer to unknown than A-list when they got the gun.

The slow build was the plan

Amazon MGM took full creative control of the franchise in February 2025 after years of the Broccoli family holding the keys. The studio then built the movie from the producers down. Pascal and Heyman came on first. Villeneuve was tapped to direct, announced last June, reportedly on a single-film deal. Steven Knight, the Peaky Blinders creator, signed on to write that July. Nina Gold, one of the most decorated casting directors working, closed her deal this past spring.

The order matters. Script and crew first, faces last. Gold has spent recent weeks meeting lesser-known actors to decide whether anyone should be added to the list of established names already expected to get a call. With those meetings wrapping, the calls to the actual test group started going out over the past week.

The target, per Deadline, is to have a Bond locked by the end of the year so cameras can roll sometime in 2027.

Why this feels slower than it is

The last time anyone played James Bond in a finished film was Daniel Craig in No Time to Die, back in 2021. Five years without a 007 is a long stretch for a series that used to turn one out every two or three years, and the vacuum has been filled with fan-casting, bookmaker odds, and the occasional actor politely batting the question away in a junket. So an audition date, even a vague one, reads like progress.

It is also a reminder that picking Bond is a hire, not a vibe. The screen test exists because Bond is one of the few roles where chemistry with the camera, the tuxedo, and the cold open matters more than a highlight reel. Villeneuve calling actors himself suggests he wants to see that in person before anyone signs anything. Reasonable. The franchise has gotten this wrong before, and it has roughly forever to pay for it when it does.

August will not hand us a name. It will hand the people who already have access to the room a much better sense of who the name is going to be. For now, the most concrete fact in the whole story is the month.
