The adaptation of Ali Hazelwood's bestseller frames its fake-dating romance as a lab experiment, and it hands the material to a director who knows the genre.

Prime Video has released the first teaser for The Love Hypothesis, the film version of Ali Hazelwood's 2021 romance novel, and locked a streaming date of September 23. The footage premiered over the weekend at the company's first Obsessed Fest fan event in Los Angeles, after a copy leaked online Friday, and it gives the book's very large readership their first real look at the cast in character.

The teaser does not play like a standard rom-com cut. Instead of stringing together a meet-cute and a needle drop, it styles itself as a retro scientific instructional film, with chemical diagrams and a dry voiceover that frames the central romance as a controlled experiment. It is a smart way to sell a story whose whole hook is academia, and it is the rare teaser that picks a tone and commits to it.

Lili Reinhart plays Olive Smith, a Ph.D. candidate who would rather think about her research than her love life. To convince her best friend Anh (Rachel Marsh) that she has moved on from a mutual crush, Olive impulsively kisses the most intimidating man on campus, professor Adam Carlsen, played by Tom Bateman. The kiss becomes a fake relationship, and the fake relationship becomes the thing fake relationships always become. Nicholas Duvernay, Jaboukie Young-White and Arty Froushan round out the department.

Claire Scanlon directs from a script by Sarah Rothschild. Scanlon is a reassuring name on this one. She made Set It Up, the 2018 Netflix movie that did about as much as anything in its stretch to convince studios the rom-com was worth funding again, and she has spent years directing comedy that actually lands, on The Good Place and Brooklyn Nine-Nine. If you want someone to handle banter and a slow-building will-they-won't-they, you could do far worse. Hazelwood is an executive producer.

The expectations here are real, and so is the pressure. The Love Hypothesis was a New York Times bestseller and a BookTok fixture, and it began as Star Wars fan fiction built around Rey and Kylo Ren before Hazelwood reworked it into an original novel. A readership that devoted is a gift and a trap. They will show up, and they will clock every change. A teaser cannot tell you whether the chemistry between Reinhart and Bateman holds for two hours, which is the only question that decides a movie like this. What it can tell you is that the people who made it understand the assignment and are not embarrassed by it. In a genre that spent a decade getting treated as a chore, that is not nothing.

The Love Hypothesis streams on Prime Video on September 23.
