David Beckham says Victoria was 'celebrating inside' after her stone-faced World Cup moment went viral

Give it up for England's most unbothered supporter.

On Saturday in Miami, Jude Bellingham dragged England past Norway 2-1 after extra time, scoring both goals in the kind of quarterfinal that sends grown adults climbing over seats. Up in the Beckham box at Hard Rock Stadium, David jumped up and punched the air. Romeo lost it. Cruz lost it. And Victoria Beckham, sitting one chair over, calmly reached for her phone to take a photo, wearing the face of a woman quietly reviewing a wine list she found lacking.

The broadcast cut to her, because of course it did. The internet handled the rest.

The roast

Comedian Jenny Johnson clipped the moment and posted it to Instagram with the sarcasm turned all the way up.

"I wanted to take a moment to single out England's number one fan Victoria, Lady Beckham!!!! There's nothing like cheering your heart out for England from home, then they cut to Victoria and we see that classic Posh Spice smile! It's so infectious!"

She kept going, claiming Posh "blows my enthusiasm out of the water" and that she yells "SPICE UP YOUR LIFE!!!!" every time the camera lands on her, "because her energy is electric." The clip did numbers.

David files for the defense

Rather than let it ride, David Beckham dropped into the comments to stick up for his wife of over 25 years, laughing emoji and all.

"She was celebrating inside I promise. Her reactions were slightly slower than mine."

Someone else offered a more cutting theory, joking that Victoria has simply seen enough football for one lifetime: "She's watched enough football in her life. I mean I don't get excited when my husband takes me to his office." Fair. David played in three World Cups himself, so Posh has logged a lot of stadium hours.

Posh has an alibi, and it's on the record

This is the part that makes it better than a standard "celebrity looks bored" story. Victoria has already explained the resting Posh face, on camera, in her 2025 Netflix docuseries.

"I've looked miserable for all these years because when we stand on the red carpet, this guy has always gone on the left. Now I didn't realize that when I smile, which I do, I smile from the left, 'cause if I smile from the right I look unwell. Consequently, I'm smiling on the inside, but no one ever sees it, so that's why I look so moody."

So by her own account, the goal celebration was happening. Just on a side of her face the camera could not see. Smiling on the inside is now, officially, canon.

What's next

The whole clan was there for the win: David and Victoria, kids Romeo, Cruz and Harper, plus Romeo's girlfriend Kim Turnbull and Cruz's girlfriend Jackie Apostel. And Posh may get another crack at an on-camera reaction very soon, because England face Lionel Messi's Argentina on Wednesday in Atlanta with a spot in the final on the line. If Bellingham does it again, keep an eye on the left side of her face.
