Gigi Hadid returned to the couture runway covered in rooster feathers for Pierpaolo Piccioli's Balenciaga debut

Gigi Hadid walked out at the Balenciaga Fall 2026 haute couture show in Paris on July 8 buried under so many black rooster feathers that a decent chunk of the internet could not tell it was her. The plume swallowed her head and shoulders, she paired it with flowing black trousers and long gloves, and it was the shot everyone screenshotted out of Pierpaolo Piccioli's first couture collection for the house.

The feathers were not random drama. WWD and W Magazine both traced the look back to a 1967 Balenciaga silhouette, the voluminous mass of fabric wrapped around the face, which Piccioli reinterpreted in feathers. So the "is that a bird or a supermodel" reaction was working exactly as designed.

A debut with a lot riding on it

This was Piccioli's opening statement at Balenciaga after his long run as the name behind Valentino. WWD, W and L'Officiel all read the collection the same way: he is steering the house off the shock-value era and back toward color and hand-built couture. He closed with a move he carried over from his Valentino days, walking out for his bow with the whole atelier in their white work coats, and WWD reported the room came to its feet for it under a blazing Paris sun.

Gigi's first couture walk in four years

For Hadid, the bigger story is that she was there at all. E! noted this was her first couture runway in about four years, with her last couture appearance being Off-White's Fall 2022 show back in early 2022. She walks plenty of ready-to-wear, but couture is the top shelf, and getting handed the single most talked-about look of a debut collection is the kind of casting that trends on its own.

The timing is the fun part. Per AOL, Hadid landed this Paris moment just days after turning up to Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce's July 3 wedding at Madison Square Garden. One week, two of the most photographed events of the summer. Most people would need to lie down.
