Mariska Hargitay will host the 2026 Emmys, the first woman to emcee in 15 years
Olivia Benson takes the Peacock Theater stage on September 14. The last woman with the gig was Jane Lynch, back in 2011.

July 7, 2026The Television Academy gave the 78th Emmy Awards to the one woman on television who has spent more than 25 years teaching America to trust Olivia Benson. Mariska Hargitay will host the ceremony, live on Monday, September 14, from the Peacock Theater at L.A. Live. It airs on NBC and Peacock at 8 p.m. ET.
Here is the number everyone kept repeating on Tuesday, and it holds up: she is the first woman to host the Emmys in 15 years. The last one was Jane Lynch, back in 2011, on Fox. Fifteen years of telecasts, a lot of them hostless or handed to a rotating cast of guys, and no woman at the podium until now. It is a genuinely good "wait, really?" stat.
It is also her first time hosting, which is the fun part. Hargitay has been to the Emmys plenty as a nominee. She was up for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series eight years running, from 2004 to 2011, and won it in 2006 for "SVU." Now she gets the room instead of a seat in it.
The pitch she is making
Her statement leaned all the way into the earnest-Benson register, which is exactly what you would expect and honestly a little charming.
"Bringing important stories into the light has been the heartbeat of my career. It's my great honor to host the 78th Emmy Awards, in the 100th birthday year of my beloved NBC, and celebrate this extraordinary community of storytellers."
She added a line about the crew, not just the famous faces: "Whether it's an actor or a director, a costumer or a sound designer, we are all so privileged to take part in creating television that unites us." Give the sound designers their moment, Mariska.
The 100th-birthday-of-NBC detail is not filler, by the way. The network is making a thing of it this year, and putting one of its longest-running stars on the Emmy stage during that victory lap is about as on-brand as it gets. "SVU" has been running on NBC since 1999.
Who signed off
Television Academy chair Cris Abrego did the official gushing:
"Mariska is one of television's most beloved stars, whose talent, authenticity and extraordinary connection with audiences have made her an enduring force in our industry and in culture. We're so delighted to have her join us as the host of this year's Emmys telecast."
Behind the scenes, the telecast is again produced by Jesse Collins Entertainment, with Jesse Collins, Dionne Harmon and Jeannae Rouzan-Clay as executive producers. Hargitay and her team are working with them on the show.
The part we do not know yet
Nobody has said what kind of host she is going to be. Benson is not a punchline machine, and Hargitay's public persona runs warm and sincere rather than roasty, so anyone expecting a monologue full of teeth might be surprised. Then again, hosting an awards show is its own skill, and first-timers have gone both ways. We will find out on September 14 whether she plays it straight or lets loose. Either way, the "first woman in 15 years" framing means the night carries a little more weight than a normal Emmy telecast, and the Academy clearly knows it.
