Rod Stewart Canceled a Concert for Laryngitis. A Day Later He Was at the World Cup.
He admits the optics 'wasn't a good look.' His defense: a promise to his two sons.

June 26, 2026Rod Stewart had two very different days back to back, and the internet did the math.
On June 14, the 81-year-old called off his concert at the North Island Credit Union Amphitheatre in Chula Vista, California, about 40 minutes before showtime. His team said he tried to go on and could not. Roughly 24 hours later he was sitting in the stands at the World Cup watching Scotland, looking like a man whose voice was the only part of him that needed the night off.
He has now seen the comments. He is not arguing with them.
The cancellation
Stewart's team put out a statement the night of the show saying he "travelled to the venue and made every effort to perform, but on the advice of his doctors and following a diagnosis of an acute upper respiratory infection that has resulted in laryngitis, he is unable to take to the stage this evening." That account was reported by Fox News and other outlets.
Rod followed up himself from the emptying venue:
"Well here I am in beautiful Chula Vista as the stage is being taken down around me. Following treatment, I'm feeling much better, but my voice is not. I'm very disappointed and sincerely apologise for any inconvenience to my fans."
Reasonable enough. Laryngitis is laryngitis, and you cannot bluff your way through two hours of "Maggie May" without a working throat.
Then the private jet
Here is where the timeline gets fun. Barely a day after Chula Vista, Stewart turned up at Boston Stadium to watch Scotland beat Haiti at the 2026 World Cup, per GB News and Fox News. He also posted Instagram footage of himself and his two sons flying out to the game by private jet.
Too unwell to sing in California. Well enough to fly cross-country for a football match. A chunk of fans reached for the word "tone-deaf," which is how Fox News summed up the reaction, and they did not mean it in the laryngitis sense.
His defense: the boys made him do it
Stewart addressed the blowback on talkSPORT's White and Jordon programme, and to his credit he did not pretend it looked good.
"It wasn't a good look, I admit, but I'm going to just have to take the stick. So, I did it for the boys."
His sons are Liam, 31, and Alistair, 20. Per GB News, Stewart said he had promised them since they were born that he would take them to a World Cup, and this was the first one that actually lined up with his calendar.
So by his own accounting: the voice was gone, the promise was not. Singing needs a larynx. Sitting next to your kids at a stadium does not.
The receipts, in order
| When | What |
|---|---|
| June 14 | Cancels the Chula Vista show about 40 minutes before showtime, citing laryngitis |
| About 24 hours later | Spotted at Boston Stadium for Scotland vs Haiti, posts private-jet footage with his sons |
| This week | Tells talkSPORT it "wasn't a good look," but says he did it "for the boys" |
This is less a scandal than a very Rod Stewart run of events: a missed gig, a jet, two sons, and a shrug. He is not denying how it looks. He just decided a World Cup he had promised his kids for decades was worth taking the stick for.
