Nine Dots pushes Outward 2 out of its July 7 early access date and into 2027

The studio scrapped the launch after open beta feedback, and CEO Guillaume Boucher-Vidal says the sequel may skip early access entirely.

Nine Dots Studio has called off the July 7 early access launch of Outward 2 and moved the survival RPG to 2027. The studio posted the news to the game's Steam page on June 16, less than a month before players were supposed to get in.

This is a real about-face, not a routine slip. Outward 2 had a locked July date and had been in open beta since June 7. Nine Dots pulled it anyway. The Steam page now reads just "2027," and the studio has signaled the game may arrive as a finished release instead of going through early access at all.

CEO Guillaume Boucher-Vidal put the decision on the beta feedback. "The last thing we want to do is disappoint fans of Outward and there has been a lot of comments stating that they wish for the game to spend more time in development before the launch," he wrote. "The point of a beta is to listen to feedback, and so we will." He was blunt about what shipping on time would have cost: pressing ahead "stubbornly," he said, would mean "delivering a product that might not satisfy your expectations."

He also apologized to players outright: "I apologize that we couldn't give you the game you guys deserve on time."

What Outward 2 is, and why the delay reads well

The first Outward, from 2019, was a cult survival RPG that made its name by being deliberately unglamorous. You could not fast travel out of every problem, getting knocked out carried consequences instead of a clean reload, and a single save file meant your mistakes stuck. It was janky in spots and proud of it. Outward 2 is the sequel from the same small Quebec team.

Here is the part worth sitting with. Nine Dots ran a beta, read the room, and decided the game was not where it needed to be, then ate the schedule hit rather than cashing in a launch it did not believe in. Studios do not always make that call, especially a smaller one without a publisher's deep bench to absorb a delay. Backing a beta up with an actual course correction is the whole reason to run one.

What is still unknown

Nine Dots has not narrowed "2027" to a window, so there is no new date to circle yet. Dropping the early access plan, if that holds, also changes the shape of the release: the next time anyone plays Outward 2, it is likely meant to be the full game rather than a work in progress you pay to help finish.
