Spider-Man: Brand New Day posts the biggest first-day ticket presales since No Way Home
The July 31 sequel tops Fandango's 2026 chart, and this week's press tour brought a new trailer and a July 29 early-access date.

Don Carpenter
July 9, 2026Sony and Marvel have not shown most of the world their movie yet, and it is already the biggest ticket story of the year. When first-day presales for Spider-Man: Brand New Day went live, the July 31 sequel posted the strongest opening-day sales of any film since Spider-Man: No Way Home in 2021, according to Deadline. Fandango says it is the service's biggest first-day pre-seller of 2026 and one of its ten best first days ever.
That put Brand New Day past the other heavyweights fighting for the summer: The Mandalorian & Grogu, the Andy Weir adaptation Project Hail Mary, and even Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey, which opens two weeks earlier. The old benchmark it is chasing, No Way Home, banked an estimated $78 million in presales before it opened in December 2021. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness came close in 2022 and could not match it. Nothing has, until now.
Presales are a measure of intent, not a result. They tell you the die-hards showed up on day one, credit card ready, which is exactly the crowd a fourth Tom Holland Spider-Man movie was always going to have. They do not tell you whether the casual audience follows in week two. But as a read on temperature three weeks out, this is about as hot as tracking gets.
The push is on
The marketing machine has shifted into its loud phase. The press tour opened in Madrid this week and moved to Amsterdam, where Holland and Zendaya rolled out a new trailer and confirmed tickets are on sale now. Cinemark put out an XD-exclusive poster alongside the on-sale announcement. Amazon has slotted Prime Early Access screenings for Wednesday, July 29, two days before the wide release, bookable through Fandango.
None of this is subtle, and it does not need to be. Sony has a rare thing here: a franchise entry with genuine mystery attached to it.
What the movie actually is
The setup is the most interesting part. Four years after No Way Home, Peter Parker lives alone in a New York that does not remember him. He erased himself from everyone he loves, and now he fights crime full-time as a Spider-Man nobody can name. The official synopsis says the isolation triggers a change in Peter he may not be able to control, and that the change might be the only thing capable of stopping a villain no one can see.
Destin Daniel Cretton, who made Shang-Chi for Marvel, directs. Holland is back, with Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal returning as the Punisher, Tramell Tillman, and Sadie Sink in a role Sony has kept vague. On the villain side, Michael Mando finally cashes in the Scorpion setup he planted back in 2017's Homecoming, and Marvin Jones III plays Tombstone. Reporting has tied several other Spider-Man rogues and the ninja outfit known as the Hand to the film, though Sony has confirmed little of it.
That secrecy is doing work. The "villain no one can see" line has fans arguing over whether this is a symbiote story, a cloaking gimmick, or something stranger, and Sony seems happy to let them argue right up to opening night.
The read
Best presales in five years is a real number and a real signal. It is also the floor, not the ceiling. No Way Home cleared $1.9 billion worldwide off a similar head start; a movie can post a monster first day and still stall if word of mouth turns. Brand New Day has three weeks, a full press tour, and a mystery box to keep the room leaning forward. Right now it is the pace-setter of the summer, and everything else is running to catch it.
